Bargello Bronzes at the Detroit Institute of Arts
'Guests of Honor' with an Enduring Legacy
May 26, 2023
One of the many objectives of the Friends of the Bargello is to raise public awareness of the world class collections at the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence. It is rare that masterpieces from the Bargello collections are able to travel, so it is especially noteworthy that four Renaissance bronzes (three with Medici provenances) will go on loan to the Detroit Institute of Arts this autumn. Encompassing the DIA’s ‘Guests of Honor’ exhibition, these four, highly important bronzes will be displayed in dialogue with one of the greatest museum collections of Renaissance arts in America.
This webinar will see Katherine Zock (Vice President & Director of Friends of the Bargello) in conversation with Alan Darr (Senior Curator of the European Art Department and Walter B. Ford II Family Curator of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts at the Detroit Institute of Arts), Benedetta Maria Matucci (Curator, Musei del Bargello) and Dimitrios Zikos (President of the Friends of the Bargello). They will discuss the inspiration behind this unique loan, the purposes of this sculptural dialogue, and the extraordinary legacy of small European museums on the conceptions and development of museums in America in the early 20th century.
